Ulalena Dinner Package
With this package, you can enjoy a delicious three course meal before or after the show, VIP Seating, and a enjoyable post-show mingling with the cast and crew. According to Hawaiian legend, a unique wind blows across the Island of Maui called the 'Ulalena. As it sweeps across the island it touches people and nature, carrying them on a journey of mythological proportions. 'Ulalena is brought to life in the ancient creation chant Kumulipo. This chant has been set to music and dance to create the production of 'Ulalena, presented only at the Maui Theatre. The musical tells the story of how Hawaii came to be, from the mythic creation of the islands and its first Polynesian inhabitants to the introduction of the Europeans to the reign of King Kamehameha to the spirit of Hawaii today. The production involves traditional butoh, hula, and modern dance as well as acrobatic feats. The cast is made up of Hawaii's most distinguished musicians and performers.
The show itself follows the mythological story of the Hawaiian Islands. The chant begins with a single man on a spiritual quest. He carries with him in a woven basket the bones of many chiefs before him. As he walks, a sprig of taro springs from the ground and begins a dance of life. From that first breath of life, come the first inhabitants of the island from Tahiti. Searching for the volcano goddess Pele and her brother, Komohoali'i, the shark god, they follow the stars and the birds until they reach the island. On the island, the rainforest comes to life with dancing trees, with young men and women running playfully around them. A simple village forms and the people learn to live off the land of their new island. Soon Europeans discover the island as well. Mistaking the white men for the god Lono in human form, the island natives offer their deepest respect. But the Europeans bring new ways of doing things, introducing conflict among the Pacific natives. A Hawaiian monarchy is born and then dissolved. Pele, disturbed by the conflict of recent ages, explodes and causes devastation. Then comes a time of peace under the light of Hina, the goddess of the moon. The 'Ulalenea wind and rain embraces this new era of peace.
