Years of beating by the Pacific surf eroded the land along Molokai's coast causing epic landslides that created these monumental cliffs. The steep vertical ridges stand between the crystalline waters and verdant land that is home to hundreds of indigenous plant species. Historians say that many ancient peoples populated this area, but today the rugged terrain has made modern life virtually nonexistent on what locals call Molokai's "Backside." The erosion of a now dormant volcano is responsible for the deep valleys that etch this jade landscape from the highest peak to the cerulean waters below. Pu'u Kukui, the apex of these mountains, stands nearly 6,000 feet above sea level.
